The gas or fuel is being filled up to the fuel tank and used for running your vehicle. But since the fuel tank is placed on the opposite end of the vehicle from the engine, a fuel pump is needed to push the gas in the direction of the engine. The mechanical fuel pump and the electric fuel pump are the two types of fuel pumps.

A mechanical fuel pump was used in earlier carbureted vehicles. This was attached to the frame rail connecting the tank and the engine and motivated by a lobe on the engine’s camshaft. Modern vehicles, like the BMW 325i, have the electric fuel pump used with the electronic fuel injection which is to be found within the fuel tank and is operated by the vehicle’s battery.

Your BMW 325i fuel pump is usually on at any time the vehicle’s ignition switch is on the “on” position. The ignition switch does not bring power to the fuel pump; instead it starts a relay that manages the higher current load so as to transmit the power to the fuel pump. This fuel pump pushes the fuel to the engine by means of generating positive pressure in the fuel lines to avoid vapor lock.

When there is a sudden problem with the operation of a fuel pump, check first its electrical connections. This may be affected by a blown fuse, loose wire otherwise an open relay. Armature bushings, damage in the brushes and other kinds of troubles may experienced by a fuel pump after some time of its used. Then you may just realize that it’s already not working.
